Are squats discouraging for your knees?
I have been using the Total Gym to do squats and I'm afraid I am hurting my knees. Has that happen to anyone? Is there a technique I can use to ease strain on my knees while doing squats?
Answers: As long as you're not using the squat contraption and have correct form, you will be ok. MAchines force your body throgh an un-natural motion and place un-necessary strain on your joints.
Make sure you own correct form, and don't let your knees crossover your toes.

i'm an ripened timer and was a health and phys. ed. highest. doing squats in the "old days" near weights was very adjectives, however, it was learned that it be not good for the knee unified. the total gym, bowflex and similar systems are less intrusive systems and doesn't put the same strain on the knees joint. you want to concentrate on the muscles that help stablilize the knees. i would check with an orthopedic dr. and/or a physical therapist in the order of your concerns. hope this helps. Squats should be fine, one tip is to not let your knees cross the stripe where your toes would be if there be a line drawn from your toes to the ceiling. also if your a female i would turn my toes outward a short time to reduce stress on hips
