35yr out-of-date feminine next to severe diarrhea?
My wife was taken by ambulance last Sat (8 days ago)... I found her passed out within the bathroom. She was severely dehydrated, her heart rate fluctuated greatly, she had low blood pressure (normal blood pressure for her is 125/65) of 90/60. She was admit for 2 days & they did blood work & stool samples & didn't find anything wrong so they released her with antibiotics Flagyl & Cipro.
She is not pregnant (blood interview confirmed). She had a gastric bypass back within 2001 & hasn't had any complications from it - always take her vitamins. It's also not the dumping syndrome that gastric patients have when eating the wrong food. No concern what she eats or drinks, it's coming out the other end surrounded by about 15 minutes. Her abdominal pain even is about a 6 but after she eats it go to about an 8.
Saw the dr fri (2 days ago) & he prescribed her Bentyl to stop the diarrhea & said to call on Mon if it hasn't stopped/slowed & he would attain her scheduled for a colonostomy
Answers: I think your Doctor have given you right advice.
Since most of the blood work came cynical, infection might be viral. You haven't mentioned it but if she has diabetes; milder form of intestinal infections can sometimes cause more severe form of diarrhea. The other possibility is germs resistant to the antibiotics used.
Whatever may be the case, it would have to confirmed by colonoscopy and/ or other test like antibiotic sensitivity. However, your major concern right very soon would be maintaining her hydration levels. My suggestion would be using commercially available (at local pharmacy store & you don't require prescription) re-hydration solutions pack. They have ideal mineral & glucose content to prevent dehydration.
P.S.- You mentioned colonostomy but you probably designed scopy because colonostomy is not a treatment (surgery) for diarrhoea. If it is colonostomy, you need an advice from Gastroenterologist.
