assist near bone marrow transplant?
can you still recieve one with a cancerous tumor present in the body? is the transplant made to like, wipe the cancer out of the bone marrow? i'm confused near that.
Best Answer: Bone marrow is a spongy substance found in bones that is responsible for producing blood cells such as red blood cell, white blood cells, and platelets. Each serve an important purpose in the body. For patients in need functioning bone marrow a BMT is often recommended. For patients with leukemia, the bone marrow may overproduce nonfunctional cells or may call a halt blood cell production completely, depending on the subtype. A bone marrow transplant is most often done for patients with leukemia or lymphoma when treatment has destroyed the bone marrow. Patients who enjoy relapsed do have a higher rate of survival with a bone marrow transplant (BMT) than those who do not. In writ to be a bone marrow donor you must be a healthy individual and be over 18 years old unless you are donating to a sibling. A full exam is necessary since becoming a donor to ensure you do not have a disease that could be given to the recipient and that you are healthy satisfactory to donate. In finding a donor blood type is not the only important factor. There are 6 markers they look for within determining how good of a match you are. A 6/6 match is, markedly, the best match but a 5/6 match can also be accepted but near is a slightly greater chance of transplant rejection. The test for a possible match is comfortable - my children all had their cheek swabbed to test and see how close of a game they were to my 2 year old son E who has AML leukemia. He is on the transplant detail right now waiting for a BMT and a matching donor. My 6 year old be the closest match but he was not a close enough clash to donate to E. The donation itself is done under general anesthesia as it can be quite raw. The bone marrow is generally taken from a large bone - usually the hip by aspiration. After the bone marrow is collected, the donor will most likely hold bruising and some pain. An increased risk of infection does exist and slightly lower blood counts are possible. Before the recipient can have the transplant, he or she must progress through intense chemotherapy, or sometimes radiation or both, in order to kill adjectives remaining cancerous cells and to make room for the new bone marrow explicitly about to be transplanted. After the chemotherapy and/or radiation, the bone marrow is introduced directly into the blood. The donated bone marrow is introduced through a port-a-cath or a central line of some species but my son E has a port (which by the way I think is one of the greatest inventions within the history of medicine - it makes everything so much easier). So there is no actual surgery involved within the BMT on the recipient's side. The new stem cells find their way from the blood into the bones and if everything go right, the transplant will take hold and the donor's cells will take over and produce nourishing cells. Typically, hospitalization lasts for over a month to ensure the BMT was potent and is not being rejected. The patient is kept in isolation next to only close family allowed to see them due to the fact that they own no immune system. Full recovery typically takes around a year.
