Is it humane or not to withhold IV fluids from my mom contained by a coma...?
My 86 year old mom has battle Alzheimers for 10+ years. Last week she slipped into a coma and lost her swallow reflex 4 days ago. I know she would not want heroic measures to prolong her life under these conditions because she and I have several conversations about this before she become ill. Some of my family member feel she should at least own IV fluids. I feel it is more humane and in keeping beside what she would have wanted to not prolong her enthusiasm under these conditions by giving her fluids. Would IV fluids make her more comfortable? She does not appear to be contained by any discomfort... her coma is deep. The nurses are keeping her clean and comfortable. I am afraid IV fluids would prolong her suffering... what should I do within her best interest??
Answers: You poor thing! Personally I think this is your verdict. Your mum is not gonna be aware of what if going on and therefore it is perfectly humane.
Unless your mom have a WRITTEN living will somewhere that she actually signed, every effort must be made to hold her alive no matter what. The doctors would have to enunciate that she is in a vegetative, has 0 adjectives of recovery, AND gives the court next of kin the option of what to do for any euthanizing measures to be "legal". So sorry to hear in the region of your mom. I just wonder - is she being given food via a tube? I'm guessing not. If someone contained by a coma isn't being fed, but still continues to enjoy IV fluids, then essentially this is still a decision not to prolong their duration. The thing is, the person will after basically slowly starve. Sorry to be blunt, but that's what will happen. If fluids are witheld from someone who is comatose, they will decline quite quickly and peacefully, over a few days. Exactly alike moral decision has be made, but it just means that things will transpire more quickly, so people are afraid of making this choice - they somehow grain it is a much more significant thing to withold fluids. I've been present rather a few times when these issues have been discussed and established with families and medical consultants, and most of the doctors are not comfortable continuing to administer fluids to someone if the decision has be made to stop food and other aggressive treatment.
