I'm have an X-ray aid!?
I am having an upper G I X-ray in a few weeks and I am scared. WHat do they do? and Has anybody else experienced this?
Best Answer: Hi First, don't be panicky. I am a xray tech. Also, I have had this procedure done. An upper G I series looks and you esophagus, stomach, and you duodenum( the 1st part of your small intestine). There is no cramp or needles involved with this. 1) You will have to drink a milkshake consistency beverage called barium. It does not weakness that great and is a little chalky. The barium contains a substance in it that allows the dr to view the anatomy of intrest below the xray machine. 2) The dr will ask you to drink some of the barium, and while you are drinking it he will watch it go down your throat and blank into your stomach. Once you have drank enough, the dr will ask you to turn in different positions so he or she can landscape the different areas of the stomach. Then the dr will make sure the barium starts to empty into the small intestine. 3) Sometimes, when the dr is finished, the xray tech will take going on for 4 or 5 more pictures. 4) When everything is done, make sure you drink a lot of water because the barium can produce constipation if not drinking enough. 5) The whole procedure usually take about 30 minutes from start to finish. I hope this has helped and have eased your mind a little!! The worst part to me be the taste of the barium which in all is not the worst piece I have tasted.
