Donating Blood - First Time?
I am almost 17 and O- and I want to be a blood donor.
Does it hurt?
Why do you have to wait 6 months to donate after having a piercing or tattoo?
Thanks.
Best Answer: It feel weird once you get up after them taking that much blood, but it doesnt hurt.. You have to keep on 6 months because it might be infected.
Answer: You can give blood (in the United States) after you reach age 17. Donating blood does not hurt any more than getting a venipuncture (needlestick) for a blood test. Once the syringe is in place, you can donate a pint of blood within 11 minutes. Sounds like closely? The human body has 10-12 pints of blood, so your body will quickly replace the blood if you are healthy. The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) make the "rules" about screening blood donors. Here are some questions you will be asked and situations you should be aware of http://www.obi.org/donating/canidonate.html You can donate whole blood every 56 days (another FDA rule). In most states, if the piercing or tattoo be done at an "approved" agency (i.e., one that is licensed and inspected by the appropriate regulating agency), you may not have to wait to donate blood. The blood hill that you go to should have a list of "approved" piercing and tattoo agencies. Some agencies do require a 6-month hang around because that's usually how long a bloodborne pathogen takes to show up. Thank you for donating blood! You are saving someone's life.
