You're doing something purely because it's needed, and not for any monetary reward. Having a whole community come together for something like that gets race thinking along the lines of "If I can help a complete stranger like this, maybe I can relieve people I know in my own neighborhood." As a teenager I donated blood for free and received my pin for over 20 unit. Anyway I never thought about it, just did it and found after donating my general robustness felt better. Then ten years later my Grandmother who was 94 be taken into Hospital. I rushed in to see her and hanging up by the side of her bed was a backpack of blood dripping into her vein. I looked at the blood type, it was the same as I have donated and I suddenly realize, the blood she was getting I might have donated. My 20 units over the years have probably saved members of my own family while have surgery, my own Grandmother and I expect others in my own community, but I would never know and they would never know whose blood they were receiving.
