And what system/alternative psychiatric facilities were put in place?
Extra detail - i am from the UK and am aware of bedlam. I hold been in psychiatric units here a couple of times and, though i own never experienced it, ECT is still very much used! Interesting answers though - particularly interested in the states.

surrounded by the USA, there was a push to treat mental patients more like family. instead of warehousing them, they were put into more home like environments. medications become better and it was found that group homes were cheaper than big institutions. the phrase "least restrictive environment" become the catch phrase. I know people that were contained by a mental hospital for years and now are in group homes and are doing very capably.

Well im going to speak of the one around here now that is broken into and constantly rumored to be haunted ( i agree with it) The treatment at places similar to this were horrific. Shock therapy was bieng tested on , within was no dentist simply a man specified to rip out the rotten teeth of patients. There were men working at the hospital who would pimp out the special women and patients were severly worsted and killed. Now im not saying something this severe happened everywhere but most places contained by the older times were rundown and misproperly controlled. I think it was because it used to be no one really implied mental illness, and people who had it be simply locked away. They were often not cared for humanely, test were done on them, etc. As treatment became better, the need to put away away the sick was gone.Need help out! Computer addiction?

This was a cynical attempt to save money, by interfering near very vulnerable peoples lives, the people who cannot keep themselves.
