We enjoy idea to believe our son might hold Asperger's Syndrome which is what some nickname "High End Autism".?
However, we were told that since he was non-verbal until about 4 years of age, this would disqualify him for Asperger's even if in that were 20 other criteria that he satisfied out of the 21. What I don't understand is that one symptom of Autism is mortal non-verbal -- so why would that not carry through to Asperger's Syndrome which again is a High Functioning form of Autism? Two symptoms of Asperger's is lack of social skills and poor interaction with others which would organize one to think these conditions might stem from being non-verbal during those first social and formative years of a child's life. I truly believe that human being non-verbal the first few years of a child's life could INDEED be included as a symptom for Asperger's. I welcome all answers, suggestions, opinion -- professional or otherwise.
Best Answer: No it would not disqualify him. My son has AS and he was nonverbal until well after age 3. The truth is that it really does not situation what they call it. You just need to take him help as soon as you can. The quicker you get intervention for him, the less impact it will enjoy on his life. Sounds like you may need another professional. Honestly I did not want to believe that my son have AS. I had him diagnosed by three different people. Sometimes just getting him see by a different person helps.
