CBT - what's it all about and does it work?

I've hear of CBT (cognitive ways analysis I mull over right?) but could you explain how it works and if it works. Does it sustain near depression? What else is it used for? Thanks

I am doing CBT through a counsellor but lone see them once a month. She have give me coursework to do CBT at home.

Just away to start it, is approaching have homework plus i hold a CD to listen to.
